I have been feeding wild birds for over 30 years and have not got it right yet. Seems so simple, just go to a store and buy a few bags of different seeds and suet and put it out. Predators are the main problem and they will vanquish your bird seed in what seems like minutes. Over time, a squirrel can figure out anything. A pack of predator birds will also raid your feeders. Then there are the big birds that you like that raid little bird feeders and some little birds themselves that will drive you nuts. How can a little bird become a big bird predator. Well simply by using their little tiny beeks as rototillers. In quick time, a bird feeder full of seed can be laying on the ground in a hurry. Okay so now you are starting to figure out how to reduce your losses and many birds now are happily comimg to your yard. What could go wrong. Well, the top of the food chain predators duth cometh...
suet - you have wire baskets and then you have wire baskets in wire baskets. none work! here you have NASA rocket scientist all designing suet feeders and you say none work!. yep, none worked until now...endowed with 30 years experience of bird feeding and being the smartest person to ever walk the face of the earth, I have figured it out. ya got ta make dem boirds STAND IN LINE.
Squirrel proof feeders - the slippery steel feeder must be on a steel pole and the feeding platform must be weight
sensitive. A little bird has no problem, but larger birds must learn to flap their wings to eat. This is great since a blue jay given an easy feeder will pack a dozen sunflower seeds in their mouth before flying away...I have placed my suet feeder on top of the squirrel proof feeder. The feeder
is a medium sized wooden birdhouse with the front taken off. The front now has a wire gate that can be opened. The wire gate that I used came from part of a large cage suet feeder. Cut only one 1 1/2 inch square hole in the wire mesh. the suet mixture should be heated and mixed in with peanut butter, whole wheat flour, corn meal, SMALL raisins, lightly ground shelled sunflower seeds, and pecan pieces.
Pour the heated mixture into the birdhouse laying on its side and let cool. Then close the gate and
return it to the pole. high gauge wire must secure this suet feeder. The feeding ledge space is limited and only one bird can feed at a time. You should have two squirrel proof feeders. One for black oiler sunflower seeds and the other for larger black stripe sunflower seeds.
Anything with a lid must be tied down with high gauge wire
The shelled sunflower seed feeder hangs from a steel flower pot holder that is about 6 feet high. The feeder has a large seed holding pot that flows down a tube. The tube is encased with 1 1/4 inch squares wire mess.
The safflower feeder is a tube with adjustable tiny holes at the base sitting on a SMALL catch tray.
Grocery store bird seed that is a mixture of whole sunflower, millet and cracked corn is used for ground feeding birds. The feed must be placed where it will not get wet and put in a feeding tube not a platform that sits on the ground. The tube must be secured so that it does not fall over.
Raisin feeder is a rectangular tray with 1 1/4 inch wire mesh box the top of which can be screwed off for cleaning. The raisin feeder must be placed away from all other feeders because
some fruit eating birds are protective of their territory.
Niger seed feeder must make the gold finch eat upside down. Some female goldfinch tend to shy away from this type feeder and prefer the shelled sunflower one. They must eat upside down to keep the purple finch from feeding there. Purple finch like easy straight up access of niger seed.
If you choose not to have one, they too will go to the shelled sunflower feeder. Niger seed is expensive and the purple finch go through it much faster than goldfinch.
mealyworm feeder - can use the pastic dome covered tray or a birdhouse one with clear plastic sides. Go to wal mart and get a big plastic storage container. Fill it with 2" high of oat bran, oatmeal, dry dog food pieces, halfed apple and potato. Buy 500 or more mealyworms and wait.
The worms will change into non-flying beetles. They live for a few weeks and lay 500 - 1000 little eggs. The eggs hatch in two weeks and ultimately become beetles again. This process takes several months with temperature being part of the determinent.
peanut butter - is used for nuthatch and others. Smear the peanut butter on the trunk of a tree near the doorway of your house. The tree should have thick bark whereby the peanut butter lodges into the crevaces. The squirrels will clean out easy access spots and being close to a doorway makes them less aggressive as well.

Peanut feeder - peanut halves in plastic dome feeder placed next to house. Clothes hanger wire hanging from the gutter in front of glass sliding door or kitchen window.
